The University of Bergen (UiB) is situated in the centre of the city of Bergen. The university has about 14.300 students and about 3.300 faculty and staff members. PH.D. FELLOWSHIP AT THE DEPARTMENT OF COMPARATIVE
POLITICS WITH A FOCUS IN DEVELOPMENT STUDIES/POLIT

At the Department of Comparative Politics, University of Bergen, a funded PhD position is vacant. The total scholarship period is 4 years, 25% of which shall be dedicated to teaching, supervision and administrative tasks at the Department.

The Department of Comparative Politics offers an inspiring research environment for the study of political institutions, organizations, processes and behavior at the local, national and international level. Our research covers Asia, Africa, Latin America, the US and Europe. The faculty and students at the department are active in academic debates nationally and internationally. Currently the Department administers a bachelor and master program in Comparative Politics and a bachelor program in European Studies.

The research in the Department of Comparative Politics is organized in research groups and the proposed PhD project is expected to be related to one of the research groups at the Department:

l Welfare and Democracy
l Democracy and Development
l Research Methods
l European Politics

The announced PhD fellowship is tied to the University of Bergen’s strategic focus on Development
Studies and may include a wide range of comparative political themes empirically linked to the global

Qualificationsl Applicants must hold a master’s degree in political science and the applicant must be able to document proficiency in research methodology. The master degree must be completed by the application Deadline. The requirements for grades are normally B on the Master’s dissertation and for the Master’s degree in total.

A brief research proposal (5-8 pages) is required together with the application. The research proposal must present the topic, the research problem(s) and choice of theory and methods. The proposal should also include a plan for the development of the different parts of the project. A budget of running costs should be included. Admission to the PhD-programme is based on the research proposal upon being hired.

The teaching language in the Department is Norwegian and English.
